i know there are some professional welders on SSM just by viewing the owner profiles and various threads in the forums.  are there any professional welders that don't work solely on vehicles (paint and body, suspensions, etc)?  reason i ask is because i'm currently enrolled in automotive technology at a technical college and was thinking about switching to the welding program they have here.  i'm basically wondering is what kind of jobs are out there for welders, besides in the automotive industry.  kinda give me an idea as to what jobs i can get when i finish the program.

welders are in huge demand all over. My father in law works at Komatsu in Peoria IL where they build the huge electric mining trucks. Most of that is welded together and finding/keeping good welders is hard to do.I call on trailer manufactures for my job and all of those guy that build trailers (think semi truck trailer) have large amounts of welded componentry, especially the tanker industry.Hell if you had formal education in welding you could probably go and find a job in just about any industry really.

down here where i am the biggest demand is at ship yards. i have worked on alum. fab teams at ship yards, i have been in fab shops making prison furniture and doors, you also have structural welders for new buildings and pipe welders which are used everywhere in plants and what not.... it is easy finding work as a welder. the automotive side is a very small part of it.carlos

I Travel as a Millwright/welder doing contract work for a few diff companies. Usually when you think of welding you think of sitting at a bench welding on some new metal, usually in a controlled climate. Well There is much more to it then that. It is back breaking dirty work  some times. Im just saying if you get a job that is out in the elements then expect the worst. You can make some really good money in it but there is allot of other professions that pay just as good and you don't have to loose vision and breath in nasty fumes all the time. I my self would not recommend it as a retire sort of job. Butt it is something good to have under your belt for other lines of work.
