Really? Is the 22r a good motor? Sure is, Toyota makes it

22r is a kick ass motor. I've had 6 of them only problems I've seen was with the timing chain guides (easy fix), and stupid electrical gremilins. Check out Lc Engineering and downey off road if you want good performance upgrades.  check out yotascene.com What motor is in the 93? 22r or 22re

slow but they last FOREVER. I have personnaly seen several with over 500k on them and they are going strong. as long as you keep an eye on the timing chain and the head gasket seems to want to go around 350k but thats an easy fix. I have had my 89 for 5 years and all I have done is change the timing chain and alternator three times and starter quite a few times but the alternator is my fault and the starter is an autozone special with a lifetime replacement so its all good. IF the timing chain breaks the engine might as well be junk, I neglected to change my chain late last year and it broke on me and that was the end of that engine but I am putting in another one and putting a dual row timing chain (good upgrade) and lc engineering pro efi head on it so I can get closer to the elusive 130hp mark.

The OE engine for that truck is the 22re. It is a 2.4L  fuel injected sohc motor. They are dead reliable although the head limits performance possibilities. If the truck has a 22r in it then someone has swapped the 22re out for the older carbureted 22r.
