Just wondering if any of you guys have had this problem. its a 93 toyota pickup, 5 speed. When i accelerate and drive there are 0 problems except for a noise, a weird whining noise that the faster i go the louder it seems to get but if i take it out of gear i get no noise no matter how fast im going which i believe eliminated the whole rearend. The driveshaft is tight and i noticed oil spotting around the rear part of the transmission where the driveshaft enters it. I drove it home 100+ miles with no problem other then the noise but i dont want to be out driving and have something break. I noticed the truck has 2" blocks, no shims or anything & i know on my buddies s-10 he didnt have shims and it smashed the driveshaft through the seal destroying the rear of the transmission. I also get no sounds when using the brakes, i originally thought it was one of the rear shoes dragging which i would still like to check.. Thanks for any help.

My s15 had this problem when I bought it. Turned out to be the ring and pinion went bad, a tooth from one of the gears had broken off. I just bought a new rearend from a salvage yard. Noise is gone. Sounds like the same thing for you. I used to think it was the transmision because you could hear it clear as day inside the cab, sounded like the noise was right under me. Someone on here told me it is the noise from the rearend vibrating off the driveshaft.

I've got a whining noise also.  Put the clutch in goes away.  I figured run it til it breaks

I went to a shop today and they looked at it, Said it was the inner axle shaft bearing. We used the stethoscope, it was on the right side of the pumpkin right before where the housing gets straight. I looked at the 93' toyota online shop book and it doesnt show and inner bearing, just the outer and the snapring where it go's into the differential. If thats where its whining and theres no bearing there im thinking it's the differential which sucks so im gonna have to get the junk yard one instead of paying the 500-800 as quoted.  Wayne- i checked the gear oil out back and when i removed the fill plug some nasty gear oil came out, so i figured it was full. If its the original rearend then its got 200,000+ miles on it...
