relocating the emissions cannister

on my hhr the cannister hangs down lower than everything else. can these be turned on their side. what is actually in them? and what do they do?
if i need to move it whats the best way to extend the lines?
i need it out of the way when i finish the rear or ill crush it.

you can extend the lines by getting some rubber hose and attaching it to the plastic line and then attaching the other end to the cannister.  if you drag throught it, your engine light will come on.  it is used to hold gas vapors  until the engine is turned on and then it is pumped into the throttle body to get rid of the vapors so they arent released into the air  also there is a charcoal substance in the canister that the vapors attach to until the engine is on.  hope this helps

thanks. i was joking about draging it off cause nobody replied. so since it just holds vapor i can turn it on its side right?
