ok, i'm working on an 89 mazda xtra cab,replacing the carrier bearing. and, when we took the drive shaft out of the tranny, about 1 gal. of water spewed out of it. i don't have any clue what this problem may be. any ideas?

1st off. did u drive this truck befor hand? if so how much? do u know if its a flood damage truck? and your sure it was water... was it milky water oil mix? nor just nuthing but water? and are u sure it came out of the tranny and not the drive shaft? cuz most drive safts are hallow... so it may have come out of there if you had your bed off maybe!

i mean if your are working on the truck with the bed off for a long time... the drive shaft my have been getting water in it some way some how... good luck... just my 2 cents

I have seen on most of the mazdas that the seal on top of the transmission goes bad.  With that being said, it allows water to come in from the top when your riding on wet roads or what ever.  You can see this if you take the console out around the shifter and then remove the rubber seal in the cab.  Once you have that off, you can inspect and replace the shifter seal on the top of the transmission.
