Just looked in my steel supply bookStandard Black Prime PipeNominal 1": 1.315 OD, 1.049 ID, 0.133 Wall Extra Heavy Black Prime PipeNominal 1": 1.315 OD, 0.957 ID. 0.179 Wall Do you have a caliper? Tube should give you 'actual' numbers (1.000, 1.25 etc) , pipe is gonna give you oddball sizes like above.

I and other folks I know use black iron pipe. As long as it's thick enough, it don't matter if it has a seam,.

The seam isnt the issue. Its the mechanical properties of the steel used in the manufacturing process. Pipe is not manufactured for structural use. It's to move turds and water from one place to another.

Just buy the right stuff and know it's the right stuff. It's only 5 feet. Even if you buy only 5' of chromoly you're not gonna break the bank.

I wouldn't use black pipe to move my turd!

lol i found this at work and was wondering if it would work. steel shops around here, min order is 150 bux and they dont seperate lengths of tubing or pipe.  joel, roughyl 1.32 OD and 1.10 for the ID.

I'm gonna guess its 1" sched 40 but that would give an ID of about 1.049. The dimensions you gave equal a wall thickness of 0.11 though, which is less than 1/8 and your inital post said it was close to 3/16.  Either way with those numbers, and the fact that its not even 1/8 thick, it chalk it up as too questionable to be worth the trouble LOL

James call metal supermarkets they are on Williams Dr. off of Bells ferry. They will sell cuts any size and they are reasonable.
