miller makes a better tig and mig/fluxcore welders but i think lincoln makes a better arc.  but everything i use at work are huge ass machines.  i'm a boiler maker so we need welders that can weld anything from carbon to stainless to corten to inconel and everything in between.  but like someone else said, everyone has thier own preferences.

i picked up my millermatic 210 brand new 6 years ago and its still welding and working perfect. the first welder i got was a lincoln 3200hd, it was a decant welder, but after 3 years i started having problems with it so i just replaced it with my miller.  the only problem i had with my miller is the control board went out, but it was still under warrentee so it got it fixed for free. cant go wrong with miller

Miller 175 is the way to go, descent size and versitile unless you building a tank.

Will a 140 handle the frame welding such as notches, brackets and all that?

Edited: 9/24/2009 12:01:47 PM by iLLblazeryep the 175/180 series welders from miller or lincoln would be the way to go. Personally I like my blue machines, I have a Miller 135 and a 252 which is an awesome welder, but probably bigger than what you need. When I did chassis work out of my buddies shop he had a lincoln 175 and then replaced it with a 180 when those came out. They handled everything we through at them. 1/4" will be no problem. The only downside to the smaller 220 machines is a low duty cycle, but if you arent running a shop its not a big deal. There is always measuring and cutting to be done when the welder needs a break.

I have a lincoln 135 plus, which is about 8 years old. never a problem with it. and i just grabbed a lincoln 180c last year this time. all about the red. My welder at work is a lincoln TIG older than me. things a champ...and like someone stated above, home depot has some parts if you run in a bind on the weekend... i hate the place myself, but when times are tough...lol.
