my buddy just bagged his on 22s and didnt shorten the rearend....he did however have to flare each bedside out about 1/2 inch, but its not noticable at all...It also really depends on your width and offset of the wheels you choose

it all depends on the wheel offset  most wheels in a 22 will tuck  fine no issues  when you start looking at 24's  is when youll most likely have to narrow the rear  i had to narrow the rear of mine 4" total for my 24's

The problem is you will find a wheel you love and it wont be in a offset positive enough to tuck.. I ran into this multiple times.  And yes it is almost impossible to find 24's that will tuck because most of them are 10" wide.  You can take 1-2" out of each side really easy..   Having the axle cut is a good idea in my book. I'd just do it when it's all apart to make it easy... I do not know what it cost's to have your bed sides stretched but most shops around here charge $500-$700 to cut it all apart and weld it back up and about $125-$150 each for the shortened axles.
