Im trying to get my exhaust built and dont care to trailer the truck all the way up to the muffler shop. So, can I weld SS exhaust with a MIG welder...flux-core set-up. Only the muffler and cat are SS, the rest will be regular exhaust piping(aluminized mild steel).

Fuck it, ill weld it up my damn self.

Nobody know if you can weld SS with flux-core MIG?

clean off the aluminum coating at try it. it should stick but it will be ugly for sure. You should be using a stainless transition rod or wire.

short answer dont do it, long answer yes it can be done but tig welding is going to be your best bet with a stainless rod.

With a MIG you can weld stainless steel using 309L wire and trimix gas.  If you need to weld aluminized steel tubing to stainless you can do this as well.  You will need 308L wire and tri-mix gas.  However keep in mind the stainless steel expands more then the aluminized steel tubing and with all the heat cycles on a exhaust system this will crack over time.  Best bet is to weld in a flange where you want to switch over to aluminized tubing and bolt that section together.

You might consider tack welding everything really well with the mig and disassembling it and taken it to get tig welded.  However, please note whoever is going to tig the welds is going to want a perfect joint, no gaps really at all

Without the proper wire it will rust!

YEAH YOU CAN DO IT WITH FLUX CORE. YOU WILL HAVE TO TURN THE VOLTAGE DOWN. I DID MY MOTORCYCLE EXHAUST, AND A FEW OTHERS WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO TACK WELD ALL THE WAY AROUND IT. IT WILL PENETRATE FINE. STAINLESS BURNS THROUGH REAL EASY. FLUX CORE MELTS PRETTY GOOD ON THE STAINLESS. JUST TACK ALL THE WAY AROUND AND OVERLAP EACH TACK IT WILL  BE PLENTY STRONG. DONT LET ANYONE ELSE SAY IT CANT BE DONE. BECAUSE IT CAN. I USED A LINCOLN POWER MIG 14O. SOMEONE MENTIONED THE WELD WILL RUST AND THATS TRUE, I DREMELED MINE AND POLISHED IT AND IT DIDNT RUST AFTER THAT
