I have seen different people use a brown masking looking paper on cars and trucks when they are working on them.  Is it self adhesive and what is the make / name of the stuff? Thanks

i know 3m makes an adhesive paper that we use at bodyshops to protect windows, paint, chrome etc from weld splatter but i think its around 100 bucks or more a roll

I think that is what I am looking for.  Can you put it right over the paint?

I wouldnt put it on fresh paint. But other then that Yes you can I do it all the time at the shop. but it is only spark deflection paper, if it is on a flat surface and gets weld splater on it, it can burn through the paper or get the paint hot enough under it to bubble. So I would still use a fiberglass welding blanket for that stuff.

I wanted to find some stuff so when I take it into the audio shop I can cover all the corners and what not so it doesn't get scratched.

Its pretty thin I think it would help but most of the masking tape we use is thicker but not as wide. But the 3M stuff doesnt go around corners the greatest either. and its not supersticky.

i think you would be better off wiht some foam and tape.

You can use "Transfer Tape"- Premask" from a sign supply source. It is much cheaper if you go with a non 3m brand and is available im many widths. http://www.hhsignsupply.com/ProductCart/pc/viewcategoriesCustom.asp?idCategory=437 link to some prices examples, find a local sign supply company and you can avoid shipping costs. GL
