I currently have a 34r redtop optima battery in my 96 tacoma 2.4L, and I'm running 2 viair 480 compressors, a sounds system (1 kicker 12" and 1000 watt amp), along with my alarm, so i'm running a pretty heavyload and i'm just wondering if i'm using the right battery or if i should be using a different kind, maybe a deep cycle? I do notice that when i let off the gas the lights dim down a noticeable amount, so i just wanted to get some suggestions, I dont have problems with it turning off or anything while im driving but the lights dim down alot when i let off the gas. I like the optimas i just wanna know if i could be getting more out of something dif thats easier on my alternator. The problem isnt my alternator because that alternator is new.

help appreciated

The problem is your alternator probably.  Even brand new a factory alternator would find it hard to run at full amperage all of the time, especially if the load being drawn is more than the output of the alternator.  I would recommend a few things.  1 would be a bigger alternator that exceeds the current draw of all of your accessories, and does so at a reasonable RPM level.  The second option would be caps and or more batteries, although more storage would only extend the time you can draw before the alternator needs to charge again.  It's pretty much like running to small of compressors to maintain the tank pressure with lots of use.

I've run a Yellow top for the last 6 years, along with a 140 amp. Just put a PC150034/78 Odyssey  in.The problem with the OPTIMA is the recharging of ,if way down only 2 amps @ a slow charge will bring them back up. And will never come up full with the charging system! The Odyssey is a deep cycle/start ( same as I had), but as a longer use time/warranty( full 4 years & 12 years use ) ,& will fully charge much better!

Im running a yellow top on mine, I noticed that even with the 170 amp Load Boss alternator on mine, My lights still dim at idle, no big deal for me, the second I touch the gas its fine, and even when they dim its only down to like 13 volts (I got a volt guage) Im sure half mine dimming is because of the efan etc too. But My battery is in the bed, and all wiring going to it and to the alternator are 2 guage

If you want to stick with an optima, switch to a yellow top. Have you don e the Big 3 upgrade yet (google it)? If not, do that with some 1/0 or so cable and that should help tremendously.
