would like to see pics if at all possible of the build up.  Have really been considering doing this only carb'd.

the 5.0 intake will be too high, your hood wont shut. unless you use a big cowl, or modifyu the original efi manifold.   carbed would be better, as edlebrock makes some low profile intakes.   and it is really a simple swap. take out your motor/trans put the new one in, and make motor mounts, trans mount.   the efi is pretty simple to wire, i suggest the stock ford stuff, but there are stand alone units.   in my humble opinion the AOD trans sucks.   personally for the hassles, id keep your 22r and build it.  hang a decent turbo on it, and make more power, and be a more way cool factor then a ford motor in a jap truck..

The AOD is a huge trans, go with a C4 if you can find one, or at least a C6.  I started with an AOD and sold it after just looking at how much would have to be cut when I put my 5.0 in my mazda.

The AOD would be better than the AODE. It is non electronic and uses a kick down cable instead. The C6 is no smaller than the AOD. However, the C4 is a lot smaller. You could also get an overdrive tranny out of an explorer/ ranger but I can't remember the name of it. A4LD??? I also suggest going carb instead of FI.

ive been thinking of going carb but i keep worrying what if my state goes to emission testing it would be alot easier to pass with efi. i also might just put a t5 manual in it but i think i would drive it like i stole it and mess my rear end up lol!!!

toyota rear ends can be built bullet proof! I wouldn't be as concerned with the rear end.
