a couple weeks ago i noticed my fuel gauge would go up and down while im driving periodically (not sure if has anything to do with the problem), then a couple days ago i went out of town and left my truck parked for a few days and when i got back today and tried to start it it cranked but wont start, any clue what it could be? or what i should check for?

its a 1996 toyota tacoma 4cyl, 2.4l   **oh and the check engine light just came on last week, so im guessing it might be spark plugs?

not positive but it sounds like your fuel pump took a chit.   easy test,  when you turn the key to the on position not starting you should hear a high pitch wine.

didnt hear anything when i switched it to on, but even before when it ran i either didnt notice or it didnt make a noise either.hmm

are you gettin spark? are you getting fuel?  you should be able to hear the fuel pump kick on...

take off the intake tube, spray some starting fluid into the throttlebody, and then start it, it should start and run for like 3 seconds then die, if it does then you arent getting fuel

Toyota fuel pumps prime on the Crank not when the key is on so it wont wine....Make sure on the passenger side inner front fender your ignitor didnt come loose..that has to be grounded or it will not turn over. Are your inner fenders cut out? If not it will be bolted down with two bolts to the top of the fender..if they are cut out most the time they are relocated to the rail where the fender bolts to...they tend to come loose..happened to my tacoma and my buddies. hope this helps.

Sound like some type of short somewhere. Toyotas have more than one fuel relay not just the one under the hood...might wanna go down to napa, they can print you out a diagram of where they are and you might wanna try replacing them. I know the older toyotas have a hidden relay behind the passenger speaker that opens the circuit to tell the fuel pump to turn on and that is a touchy one...good luck man.
