tearing up wrag joints!

Im building an stockfloord 85 toyota pickup and this is my first big build and i ran into a problem with my steering. i keep tearing up wrag joints,i had to section the control arm a bit for the steering shaft to come through but it keeps tearing them. ive noticed the 4wd toyota has a different steering linkage from the gearbox, is it easier to use those or are there any other options? need advice!!
