...

Hey guys, i have a 99 ford ranger with the 3.0l V6 as a shop truck that i use to grab steel and parts and shit like that. Lately, its been running rough, and has had the check engine light on.

I got the code checked, and it said the EGR valve had malfunctioned, too high and too low. So, i changed out the EGR valve. That fixed my light on the dash, but the problem didnt go away.

So, the guy suggested that i change out the EGR Valve Position Sensor.... I did that too, and still nothing..

Im not much of a ford guy, so im stumped.

The problem im having is that the truck is just sputtering and spitting around when the motor kicks down into over drive at like 50mph and the RPMs kick down to 2k or 2.2k, it just stutters and sputters. If i switch it into over drive, it goes mostly away... still a faint bit present, but its much better.... It accelerates fairly well, it seems like it should be a bit better, but its not terrible, but as soon as i get up to 55 or so, and it kicks down the rpms a bit, it just sputters like crazy. The sputter is also present sometiems when im just idleing ....

Any ideas?

Taylor, just to clarify, the check engine light is now gone?...

If so , the as I tell my trainees, if the check engine light is not on, go back to the basics. i.e., tune-up, air filter, fuel filter, and a recently, we discovered a clogged Catalytic converter, which casued a random misfire code and a bad acceleration..i want to even think that it could be possibility of the coil pack.. anyways, my ideas for you bud..

Actually, i think i figured it out.... not sure yet because i have not replaced the part yet...

I went down to a local shop i do some machine work for and he scanned the truck for me, and it is showing no reading at the #6 spark plug... looked at it a bit closer and I can see that there is one spot on the back side of the plug wire that is chafed and possibly nicked.... I moved the wire and the truck instantly started running better....

Im planing to swap the plugs and wires tommorrow.

thanks man, i do appriceate the help.

Do yourself a favor and replace the cam sync,it is a real bad issue with this motor. If you let it go and it completely wears out you will lose oil pressure and the motor will lockup before you know it. The new parts are redesigned to solve the problem just DON'T use a Dorman part.
