Hi guys.I'll make the lead in to my current situation short.About a month ago the truck would start but when the lights were turned on the truck would die.I Had the altermator tested and it failed. So i ordered a new (used) one from e-bay and installed it today....this is where my new issues come to play. The first time I turned the ignition the truck didn't even try and turn over and the PCM relay (at location 54) started to buzz/hiss! I pull it, get a replacement, and install it. Now I should be golden, right? WrongWhen I try and start the truck the fuel pump runs(longerthan usual) but no motor/starter action at all. Also, if I turn on the headlights the fuel pump stops. My code reader won't connect to the obd2 port...keeps telling me there's an error. And it seams like the right blinker light in the dash is dimmly light...I don't know what this is or if it could be an indicator to the problem.I've checked all the fuses, everything appears to be fine. It started a month ago then I unhooked the battery, removed the alternator, let it sit for 30days, installed new alternator, connected battery, and it will not start...

If you have any ideas to why this would happen or how to fix it please let me know.

Btw, 2001 3l V6 extended cab step side bagged and bodied. I sold truck in 08 and bought it back last march....Since then I've been fixing all the things the kid screwed up during the short time he had it.

Sounds like a ground problem

I have made a little progress towards
Diagnosing the problem:
The starter does spin, there is constant power, but the lead to turn on the starter does not get power when the ignition is turned on.

Also, since the fuel pump stays on when its put to start or run I am assuming something is not telling it to turn off after it primes the fuel system.

What tells the fuel pump to stop? Is it tied to the headlight circuit?
What is the path from the ignition to the starter to activator the solenoid on the starter motor?

There is no relay on my truck on the fender...an the Haynes Manuel doesn't go into alot of detail in this subject.

my brother had a problem similer to this wen he was building his 87 ranger. wat ended up happening is wen he bought the truck he went through the wiring to find that a mouse had chewed some coating of wires so it was crosing an sending wrong signals. maybe check under you dash wen you had the truck siting for 30 days. hope it helps

Seems like somehow the fuel pump is tied into the right blinker...not sure where yet, but when the righ blinker is turned on I don't hear the relay and the fuel pump stops priming.
I guess I just have to run through every circuit testing with a meter and make sure the right wires are going to the right places.
I'm starting to think the fuel pump got wired onto the tailights therefore blowing the relay (I already replaced) and when the lights are turned on (or the right blinker which doesnt make the relay switch noise now) makes the pump stop...At least I hope it's that "easy".
That would also explain why the green arrow indicator for the right blinker is always on...

I'm tired, this post is knida hard to read and I don't think it makes much since...

You have a bad ground some were in the rear harness

Tanks for the help guys.
I'm tearing into all the wiring.
I don't hear the starter relay click at all when I turn the ignition. So I think I'm getting closer.

Can I remove the relays for the ac/heater/washer fluid and similar things since I pulled all that out? It won't effect anything else as long as there's nothing tapped into th circuit right?

Did you read what bagged85 said? Maybe before tearing into harness look at the grounds as he advised. He knows his Rangers. I need to pick his brain on issues with my 93 some day.

could be your bcm or it kinda sounds like low voltage did you put a meter to it. also it could be the voltage regulator not sure if it is external or not.
