To get a diagram that will tell you exactly what you can remove and keep check out
www.alldatadiy.com. It will tell you wire colors, loactions, where it goes through a grommet and if there is a connection in the wire. It is very handy. There are 2 sample vehicles on there and one of them is a 98 tahoe. Lucky for us the wire diagram is pretty much the same as the 97 truck. I have a 97 as well and used it a lot when I did my motor swap tracking down a wiring issue. Hope this helps.
