I don't know if you are stuck on that Era engine, but if you wanted to go all mechanical, the older 12v Cummins motors are a whole lot easier than the 24v Cummins, considering the 12v model doesn't have electronics. Pretty much the same as putting an older carb'd engine into something. Power for your alt. and starter and ignition and you're done. The newer 98-up 24v is a lot more pricey and a lot more complicated.
It would pretty much go as with any motor swap though. Get the computer and wiring harness from the donor vehicle and it's prettu much self explanatory. There is just so much involved with newer electronically controlled diesel engines, it's easier to use and older 97-older 12v Cummins. I know advanced adapters make a kit to put a 12v in pretty much anything it will fit into. I actually would love to find a late 90's crew cab dually bowtie with a 350 and do a 12v swap.
