Engine stutter around 2500 - 3k

I just bought the 2200 and like the title says, I have an odd stutter when hard accelerating or cruising around the 2500-3000 mark. Usually it is closer to 2700, but the engine will stutter, almost like it is missing. If I let off throttle, or give it more gas, it recovers and is fine. 1993, stock carb. I am guessing the carb needs cleaned since the PO only drove the truck 500 miles last year, but if there is anything else I should look for, it would be appreciated. It also has a very high idle when it is first started ( around 2k or more ), if I blip the throttle it comes down to a normal level for warm up. With that high idle comes smoke (valve stem seals?), until it warms up, then it is fine.

Do a tune-up first. It isn't likely the carburetor is the problem.
