87 b2000 aftermarket head unit

So i bought and installed an after market head unit (bluetooth and radio only, no cd player) im almost positive i have it all hooked up right but the stereo only comes on with the headlights lights on....? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot/fix this? Thanks!

Sounds like your stereo's red power wire (12 volts positive) is attached to the wrong place. It should tap into the fuse box into a circuit that is independent of the lights, just on when the key is turned. I seem to remember that Mazda labels the fuse for the cabin and stereo as "ROOM", see if yours has that and tap into the circuit there.

The stereo's yellow memory wire should tap into a circuit that is 100% powered, like for the dome lights.

This is what i have. Now when i checked the "Room" circuit with a volt meter it reads -12v dc with the key off and on. I found that the circuit with the defog fuse switches from 0 to -12v dc (thats off then on) so would it be ideal to tap into one of those?

Before that, try head cleaner fuse (that was for a cassette player, sounds like a good stereo tap in) or wiper fuse. Correct, needs to be off and on like the defog one.

So I finally got my radio to power on with the ignition. I just tapped into the cigar fuse with a fuse tap. Works perfectly fine now. Thanks! Now on to other issues.

The MazdaTrucking.com site is temporarily down. The owner of the site is not the same bunch who actually run it, so they have to get the owner to re-new the fees. The headlight switch self-repair is removing the combination switch (after removing panels and the steering wheel) and taking off the headlight switch part and either cleaning all the contacts real well, or getting a new headlight switch to install into the combination switch. There are two types of headlight switch assemblies: one has four contacts in the connector, the other has five. And one has white where the other has black, so one needs to match that up if buying new.
