Ok, heres the deal ... I have a 4wd that I want to make a 2wd so that I can slam it. I have looked at several options which include a Porterbuilt dropmember (not heavy duty enough) or a 2wd frame which I cannot find one close enough to me. There is one listed on here that is a good price but shipping it the way it is in parts would break me.

So here is my thought. I am in the planning stages of building a dropped straight front axle (similar to an old hot rod, or what some of the commercial trucks run now) that will initially bolt up to the leaf springs, then later be bagged with either a 2 link or 4 link. All I need is the inner knuckles for a Dana 60 and then all my outer knuckles (spindles), new brakes, bearings, etc, will bolt up to the inner knuckles. I can make the axle as wide or narrow as I want and build as much "drop" into it as I want as well. The other potential upside is that regardless of height, the camber will not change at all.

I know it sounds a little kooky, but it would definitely be different and should work like a champ. Any of yall seen anything like this yet (doubt it)and what do you think?

Front drive line might be a bit of a bitch.

Plus, how are you going to get the axle shafts to work on a dropped front axle? Universals?

Unless I'm totally missing the point and your gonna scrap the whole 4X thing and just use a plain, straight, I-beam type axle bolted to the leafs.

In which case, you might run into clearance issues with your engine and what not if you want to go really low...and by really low, I mean anything that is lower than a stock 2wd.

Not to mention the steering linkage...

It would be cool, and definitely very different, but I think there's a lot more involved than what initially meets the eye.

seems like more of a pain and time and money issue the it would be rather then jsut get a new frame from a 2wd

There will be no front driveline or axleshafts since it will no longer be 4wd.

As for straight front axle, it would be a front axle, but not technically straight. Imagine, or should I say IMAGINE that the "shape" of the axle is similar to a 2wd commercial vehicle, only smaller.

In this case, I can build in however much "drop" I want into the front beam, just like you can buy dropped beams for a double I beam F-150. Steering linkage will be handled by a 2wd steering box along with some machine work and heim joints.

I will make sure it will be low enough (throwin' sparks), since this is the only reason that I would go to this much trouble. I could probably find a clapped out 3/4 ton or dually around here given enough time, but those things get driven so long around here that they might as well just drive them to the dump when they are done with them.

I have not given up on the prospect of finding a 2wd dually frame, but I am considering all other options right now.

what kind of truck is it ? if it is a square body you can unbolt all the front suspension and replace it with 2wd becuse i will be doing that same thing to my wifes k5 blazer as soon as i finish bagging my dually

why not just get some 3x4 box tubing and build your own frame rails

Well, the 4x4 is gone now ... the guy I bought it from actually bought it back. It has now been replaced with a 98 CC dually but this one is a 2wd. I will be doing a lot of work to it in the future, but it will have to wait for now due to time (or lack thereof). Too many other projects around the house and I travel quite a bit for my work.

I just got back from the Bahamas two weeks ago and I'm heading back out of town up to Jacksonville for this whole week then driving up to South Carolina for the weekend to see my son. Thank God for the company car and gas!
