what should the pinion angle on a stock 98 dually be , i measured it at 4 degrees up. seems high to me ????

I dont know what stock should be but that seems high to me too. Just check it compared to your trans output. If your truck aint on completely level ground, it doesn't really matter what the guage says, ya know?

Pinion angle is not a "setting". It is set in relationship to the transmission output. Equal but opposite, so if you measure your tranny output and it is pointed up 2 degrees you point the axle down 2 degrees. But since it is a 2 piece driveshaft it's a little different. You go from the angle of the carrier bearing if I remember.

But until you get the tranny in and carrier bearing mounted you can't set it.

Dude, I cant tell ya how much I was told (when I had a at speed vibe it was the pinion angle) that I had an angel issue by driveline shops and what not. Turned out to be unbalanced drums and hubs. Anyway.

Like husk says you want the equal sides, but lottsa guys do them differnt ways. Maybe the easiest is have the first two joints at 0 and the last two equal in opposite directions. You dont want the drive line making a V wanting to whip itself around. Hope that helps...

you cant have the first 2 angles at 0, a u joint has to have some angle to it which makes the needle bearings inside the u joint spin, if its at a 0 angle the u joint will self destruct. as far as setting the pinion angle with a two peice drive shaft. the whole point in setting the pinion angle is for all the angles in the drive line to cancel each other out. that way there isnt any vibration caused by the drive line.

here is the link that explains how to set the pinions, two peice drive shafts are on page 3,

there is really no way to measure what it is supposed to be with out a transmission and drive shaft in the truck. if your setting it up stock than maybe some one with a stock truck can tell you what theres is.
