I would like to drop the rear of my '86 square dually cheaply until I can pony up for bags and a 4 link, so i think that shackles and hangers fit that well but i have some concerns.

a friend of mine had shackles and hangers on his sqaure and he had to cut a bed support to clear the shackles. this caused the bed to start falling apart over time. the sides started spreading. His pinion angle was also terrible.

Are these issues typical or did he just have a bad combo of parts?

im pretty sure when you use the drop hangers/shackles, you have to move the pinion bearing up so many inches. if you don't , you get a bad vibration.

i would weld the tailgate to the bed. it wont spread anymore..

I think Sparky means carrier bearing.
I'm running a flip kit and shackles and my carrier bearing is in the stock location, but the pinion angle was adjusted on my c&c. I doubt notching the bed support for shackle clearance would make a bed spread.

cutting one of the 7 stringers is not going to kill the bed.

unless you parked another truck on the bed rails at that crossmember....
