Ever get that wild hair and not want to stop working until you reach a certain point? Well tonight I wanted the donor truck harness loose from the firewall, majority of harness connectors loose from sensors, accessories, etc. and the front clip off and outta the way.

All three in a row...engine donor truck, recipient truck, and soon-to-be-replaced truck.

Your really chugging along there man! keep it up

Been too busy in the shop to work on my own crap. Anyway, some progress, engine has been sitting in the donor truck completely unhooked for what seems like weeks, waiting to come out. Well, it's out!

Vortec 7.4 + NV4500 = heavy as hell and not fun to pull. Was a lot easier with the clip off of course, didn't have to tilt much to get it out. Anyway here's the shot of the new style bellhousing that I think began in '95. Hydraulic line for the clutch goes in a large hole on the driver's side, uses the plastic clutch master (which by the way has a different size hole and bolt pattern on the firewall, and different bracket inside the cab) and braided steel line to the slave cylinder/release bearing assembly. I'm hoping like hell that I can move this bellhousing, clutch, etc. to the '94 transmission, because I don't have the clutch for the '94 and the cylinders that were on the '94 are junk.

Up next...splitting the engine/trans in hopes I can swap that stuff to the other trans. Oh, and pulling the trans from the '94 to put it with the engine to make installing easier. Jeez, shoulda pulled it while I had the cab off.

Jeeze, that trans is a beast.

That's the LITTLE one from the regular C3500! The one in the HD has 6" more on the tailshaft housing and it's cast iron instead of aluminum, and has the drum parking brake on it. On to the update:

Progress? Hell, I guess so. How to get a crazy heavy transmission out of a truck when you don't have a transmission jack:

thread post photo

Strap it tight to a floor jack, drop the crossmember, pray, lower the trans, then lift the whole damn truck off it.

Manual says an NV4500 weighs 200lbs dry. Well the HD version is about 6" longer on the tailshaft housing and it's cast iron instead of aluminum, and has that big drum parking brake attached. I'd say with fluid it's probably closer to 250lbs.

Anyway got my up-close look at the two different models of trans and hopefully I can swap the front bearing retainer plate or wtfever it is between them so I can use the new style release bearing and clutch cylinder setup. Might make a few calls tomorrow trying to find out before I rip into it blindly.

I've got a few misc. pictures of both transmission styles if anybody into HD's really cares. Didn't think there was any reason to post them in this thread though.

Looks like a pretty big shop, and I never noticed you had the 19.5s

Yeah got two buildings here, one 4500' and one 4000', I rented out the 4000' to some other peeps because it was really just dead storage for me, better now that it's bringing me in some money. The place is kinda old and crusty but it works pretty good for what I need, but I'm running out of room outside now and that sux.

The 19.5's are factory on OBS 3500HD, on 10 lug rims. My '98 C3500 is converted to 19.5's on 8 lug rims from a step van (a.k.a. Frito 19.5's.)

I sold the tires off my parts truck HD the other day and had to do a bunch of tire swapping so I could have something to roll it back into the yard with, which meant stealing the motorhome-lookin' 8R19.5s off the front of my HD project, which is why you see some drive tires on the front of it now. Had a couple of junk tires mounted for the other end. So both my HD's are currently sitting on 4 instead of 6. But when it's all said and done the nice Goodyears on my '98 will be on my HD.

Back from the tire shop with the tires I sold peeled off the rims (they only charged me $40 to dismount 6 and mount 2, blew my mind, I tipped both the tire guys $10/ea), about 850-900 lbs of crap in the bed of my daily:

Damn picture resizing on the forum makes my Centerlines look like I found a hundred curbs

Bout ripped my shoulder out busting 60 rusty old megatorqued lugs loose and then throwing all those tires/wheels around but ya gotta do what ya gotta do...

OK FINALLY an update! Not a big one to post about, but a big deal to me.

All that mess about hoping to swap bearing retainers between the two and use the new style clutch setup, hell no, the cases are even different, so there's no swapping the front stuff. So I went with the plan of moving the long tailshaft, housing, and drum brake over to the newer transmission so I can use all the good clutch stuff I've already got. Took both transmissions over to my buddy's place so he could do the work; he builds NV4500's all the time so it was better to turn it over to him. He's had 'em for a few weeks and finally:

Got a call from my bud at the transmission shop. He's got the trans almost completely assembled, had to replace a couple small parts, no big deal. Called me with a list of new stuff to go pick up and come see him (the supplier is much closer to my place than he is.) Picked up a new input bearing retainer & seal, rear seal, and shoes for the drum brake - $140 total. Went to his place and got to see my trans sitting there almost complete, long output shaft transplated to it, and he used all the gears from my original trans as they were in better shape. Some final assembly and clearance checking and it'll be ready!

A sliver of metal that came out of the seemingly-good trans, was broken off the face of a thrust bearing. No big deal, just good that it was taken out of service before it completely let go.
