90 Silverado Detroit Diesel Swap

It's going slower than I'd hoped, but here are some pics of my dually. I'm swapping in an aluminum 4-71 Detroit Diesel and Roadranger RTO-610 ten speed transmission.

Here's the initial teardown.





Here's a pic of the first fitment to get an idea of how the motor mounts will be setup and what I'll need to hammer/cut from the firewall. The engine will sit about 5-6 inches rearward and 1-2 inches down.

Looks good. Is a cowl hood going to be necessary? How much does the new engine/trans weigh compared to the average 454/TH400?

Thanks. I don't think it'll fit under a standard cowl hood and I don't want to do one of those 5-6" ones, so I think I'm just going to cut the hood around the valve cover. I've got a nice polished one that I'm putting on after the install is all done.



Anyway, the standard cast iron 4-71 weighs in at just over a ton. I found an aluminum block and built it up from there using mostly aluminum parts. I'm guessing it weighs only 100-200 more than a Cummins 6BT or about twice the weight of the 454 that I pulled out.

Nice, are you going to beef up the front suspension? Is the rest of the drivetrain going to hold up? I'm really diggin' the swap.

Or you could cut a really big hole like this guy did on his OBS
