Hey guys,
So here's the deal. I got my 84 chevy dually about 2 yrs ago. It looks close to how it did when I signed the title. After a safety inspection, I had to make some repairs up front. I decided to replace all front suspension and steering parts. Just the servicable ones. New joints, bushings, links, rods, all new brakes, and shocks. Now I know what I got. I've been driving it ever since, with good luck. Even a couple out of town excursions. The front tires were dry rotted, and just dissenigrated one at a time. Soon I found myself driving a SRW truck with really large hips. I love the 2 built-in spares you get with a dually. New front shoes and she returns to her former glory. Now that I'm not driving a truck over the road, she has been promoted to daily driver. The bitch failed me again, the timing chain let go.
I got her home, and started to tear into her. I want to drive this truck everyday. so the theme for this build is true DIY weekend projects. I'll tackle things that I can do in a short amount of time and keep it on the road. Making it reliable is most important to me. I know nothing about the history of this truck, except that it pulled a race car, and when the rearend went, he put a whole salvage one in with a more highway friendly gear. Here are my thread start pics.
I think it's a decent start. here are the problem spots.
That is the right side rocker.
The left rocker is alot more solid, but it has that large dent in it under the rear door. Also, the right bed side and fender have damage. It was repaired....kinda. Actually, it's not that bad, that's a down the road thing. And as you all can tell, the interior is, well, let's not talk about the interior right now.
The timing chain kind of speaks for itself. I want to rebuild the engine. I just have to talk my father in law into letting me borrow the 454 that has been holding his garage floor down for the last several years. Otherwise, it will be a new chain set, drop and clean the oilpan, and head on down the road.
I would say right now, this is the best part of the truck. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do. I want to go in the direction wideload did with his bitchin red chevy. simple, reliable, bad as hell.
Let me know what you guys think, and I'll keep you updated on the progress. I have 2 days off a week, and not together, unfortunately. So I'll post updates probably twice a week. Thanks Fellas
