Today I finally got my eye patch taken off and although my vision is still super blurry I had to get something done. I decided to tackle to hydro boost return hose issue finally. After quite a bit of thought I decided to just run the remote reservoir tank on the cummins. It the cheapest way to go and I think it'll make components last longer. My thought being that there is more fluid in the system so it should run cooler and make everything last a little longer. Also the fluid should last longer before needing changed.
So I started by pulling the front cover back off of the engine. The dowel pin still needs tabbed down so I figure I might as well do it while the front cover is removed now instead of later. I just pulled the entire vaccuum pump assembly out with the steering pump still attached just because it was the easiest bolts to get to. I highly doubt gear alignment really matters on the pump but I marked it to put it back in just in case. You can see the dowel pin with a bolt right next to it at about the eight o clock from the injector pump gear. Very top right gear for those that are unfamiliar with is.
After that I pulled it al out and switched the canisters. Sorry no pix on that one. My hands were way to oily to be taking pictures. After I got everything bolted up I had thought it would be a straight swap but I was wrong. Nothing on this truck can be easy. Both return line pipes were sitting right inside the frame rail. I guess because the engine is sitting so low.
I pulled it back out and bent the upper pipe thinking I could make the bottom one work like it was. I bent the top one to just barely clear the top of the frame rail.
So I bolted it back up and was pretty happy with it. The bottom line was still inside the frame rail but it was short enough I could run the return line inside the frame rail and make it work. Than I slid my engine mount plate back in and found the lower pipe ran right into it.
After scratching my head for a while I bent the lower return line down and forward enough so I can route my return line in through between the frame rail and the engine mount. I didn't get any pictures of the end result because it started raining on me and I was scrambling to get all my tools into a dry place.
Sorry if my spelling is a little jacked up. I'm posting from my phone and my vision isn't great right now lol.
