Hey, Steven here in Athens GA. I got a 81 Sundowner, with the hefty 2.0! Im its back firing through the carb. Recently it was skipping really bad, well now when I go to crank it after a few rotations the carb spits out white/blue smoke and back fires. I changed the plugs when it first started skipping, didn't help, cleaned the carb with the spray stuff from AutoZone or advanced, didn't help, looked at the distributor, nothing out of the ordinary, any ideas help and info would be much appreciated!

Hey it's your timing that's off try and rotate the distributor around, it should solved it, I have an 80 ford courier with the 2.0 those are some reliable engines, I have two of them also I need a carb for mines,

2.0s and being reliable lol. First time I've seen this kind of post in almost 7 years since I've owned/messed with them.

2.0s are junk. They blow headgaskets bad, once that head gets any kind of heat on it and blows that headgasket you better cross your fingers hard. Because chances are it will do it again.

To the OP your timing is way off, sounds like the motor jumped timing. I would pull the entire front cover off of the motor to make sure the adjustment bracket didn't come loose. If it did it's only a matter of time before it jumps timing again.
