hi new to the forum and to Mazda trucks. bought my truck for super cheap from some kid but trying to figure out the issues it has is a nightmare the truck is a 89 b2200 ext 2wd 2.2l with a efi conversion. thought to finally sign up and see if i can get help getting the engine running before i decide to try my hand at an engine swap

dont know exactly what the guy did for the conversion. but the truck turns overs but doesn't start. he said when i emailed him about it that it was the fuel pump. went to buy the truck and he then explained it had to be the injectors. bought it for 240.00 got it home and checked the injectors they are working, and we are getting spark from the spark plugs we found a truck at the local junkyard and the wiring seems to match between the two a little stumped at what to check next maybe everyone else one the forum can give some ideas for what to look for or try

Welcome! I am new to the Scene as well and there is heaps of info on here for just about everything you want to know, look before you ask and the chances are there is a thread on it already.

Where you at? I

did the truck ever run post conversion?

i live in regina sk and he said it was running before he did the conversion over to efi but after the conversion he couldn't get it to run

I'm not as familiar with the 2200 carb or efi. But here are a couple of things that come to mind.

Do you know if you have a good working computer for the EFI? I don't think they were problematic for the 2200 like they are for the 2600, but you would definitely need a good EFI computer.

Timing. Again, I'm not familiar with the 2.2s, but the computer needs a signal from something, be it crank angle sensor, or in the case of the B2600i, a sensor built into the distributor, to tell the computer when to fire fuel and spark. Do you know where the source for this signal is on your truck? On a B2600, one would have to add a new distributor to provide that signal if upgrading from carb to efi.

How do you know the injectors are good? How did you test them?
Did he mod the carb engine, or replace it with an efi engine?

You said you have spark. Have you tried getting it to run by spraying some starter fluid in the intake pipe? If you have spark, but it won't run or fire on starting fluid, then you might have a timing problem. Might not be set right. Or could be as simple as not having plug wires in the right place on the distributor.

Could be a host of things. Have you checked the fuel pressure... since he was first suspect of that?

the injectors were most of the way out when i bought it so we just pulled out number one and two out and tried starting the engine and got a good amount of gas all over the intake.
we have tried starter fluid with no success. he modded the carb engine is what i understand from him. and he worked at a parts store or something and had the computer tested. thinking though im just going to keep it parked yank the engine and try my hand at doing an engine swap

Hello from another from Mid Vancouver Island..

You might be farther ahead to yank that POS engine out, and replace it with either a factory EFI or a carb. Who knows really what the guy f***ed up in the process of trying to do a half assed job.

that is what i have been thinking just looking through the forums and on the web to find ideas for an engine swap

A number of people have done the V8 swap. My views on the V8 is, gas mileage is going to go straight into the sh****. If I was going to do an engine swap and I wanted the top end grunt of a V8 with some half descent mileage. I would go with the Northstar V8.

But if you want really good mileage, then swap in a Diesel, and run it as a VO or WVO (bio-diesel). Diesels get you a mess load of bottom end grunt, and stupid fuel economy.
