Hi everyone,

i am a new owner of this beast (heh) and i had some basic questions.

Little background, i bought it from a person off of craigslist for 700 dollars, it has 90k original miles on it but it was sitting in a field for about 8-10 years. he replace the distributor cap and spark plugs and oil and and i was able to drive it home, but now it doesn't like to start every time i want it to. i.e i drive to work at 8am and at 5pm it wont start. ive replaced the battery and when i did that they tested the alternator and starter and they were fine. i checked the fuses and replaced some so the little fuel pump is on and clicking like a madman. i can see gas in the carb through the little glass, and if i spray starter fluid in the carb it starts right up untill the starter fluid is burned up.

also when it does decide to work it makes a sputtering/popping noise as a rev the engine to warm it up, as if i don't do that it will die when its cold. but when its running and warmed up there is no noise no sputtering nothing at all out of the ordinary. im wonder if maybe the fuel pump just isnt strong enough anymore? or something is wrong with the carb?

i am in California so the mornings aren't very cold (50-60 degrees). ive also never been a member of a forum so theres that.

any help will and is appreciated!

I bought a 83 mazda off a guy who could not get it to run. Took it to many mechanics and nothing. I changed the fuel filter and she ran awesome. Then I filled the tank and found out I had a leak. The tank ended up rusting out on the side where the lip it and kept clogging the filter. This may not be your prob and you prob have more but it's work taking a look into especially if it has been sitting.
Check your ground cable too. Make sure it is a large cable and your body and engine are grounded good.
Good luck
