How is everyone doing I just signed up on this forum I have a 1984.5 B2000. I love this truck there aren't many around its unique to me I have been restoring it for the past 12 yrs. I finally got it running and everything I just noticed that it started to over heat. The water pump has been changed radiator has been cleaned and rebuilt also the thermostat has been changed so I know it's none of those things. I noticed that a hissing sound coming from the back of the head and I found a plate held on with three bolts. That's where it's loosing coolant and pressure I took that plate off and replaced the gasket, but here is the problem one of the bolts is broken and it has lots of silicone on that area. It's safe to say that the mechanic that I took it too must of broken the bolt and never said anything this happened more than 12 yrs ago. Any advise on how to extract the broken bolt without having to take the head off would be greatly appreciated. The space between the back of the head and the firewall is about six inches. Thank you in advance have a great week everyone.

Im assuming that the bolt is broken off flush with the bolt hole or else you can take the plate off and then use some vise grips to turn it. if its flush or not sticking out enough you can try to tack weld something to the stub and turn that.

you probably wont have room to drill for an extractor.

if your seriouse about restoring that old beauty I would say pull the motor and rebuild her.

I just did my 91 which is a little different than yours but basically the same and with no previous experience rebuilding motors and the help of this place and youtube & a Haynes book. I rebuild mine to good working order and even did a paint job on her. she looks and runs great now.

cost about 400 total and that includes some tools and fluids.

I lapped the valve seats and everything.

I would caution to very carefully examin the head when you have it off as they crack and go bad often. if it does a remanufactured one can be had for about 300.00.

if you decide to do it take pictures for us.

ohh and WELCOME by the way.

Thank you very much for your advise I will try and take that bolt out with some vise grips. There is a small part of the bolt sticking out hopefully that will be enough to get it out. I will try to do it this weekend once again thank you for the advise and I will post pictures on the progress of my truck.
