Hi everyone.
I thought I'd sign up as I've been looking at a lot of things to do with my ute and have read some really great threads on this forum.
So what I've got is an '89 B2000 Extra Cab. Stock engine and trans, really quite worn.
I acquired this truck quite by accident. I've never been into the mini truck scene really, but a while ago I had to move house a fair distance and didn't have any heavy duty vehicles suitable for the job. So I went online and found someone who wanted to swap both a Ford 93 Econovan and Mazda B2000 ute for a Mitsubishi Libero GT, which I had happened to have only just swapped a week or so earleir for my V8 fairmont. I was quite underwhelmed with the Libero, it wasn't quite what I was after which was only realised after the trade, but oh well.
The libero was actually quite nice and I was reluctant to do the trade, but I went through with it more for reasons of necessity and practicality.
So there I was with my first ute and van ever in my life. I've always been a car driver in my 8 years of being on the road so it was all quite new to me. And little did I know that I'd stumbled into a whole new scene I barely knew existed. I also didn't expect how enthusiastic I'd become about it all.
The body could use some attention, but I'm not so worried with how it looks. So it's all just touch up stuff on the agenda for now regarding the exterior. I've been thinking for the past few months about doing an engine swap, as even though the ute drives nice and gets the job done, it's one of the slowest things I've ever driven. There are 4 main options I think are good options for me.
The Australian Ford built 4 litre straight six which I could source easily from a crashed or deregistered falcon. It's a long engine so it might be tricky squeezing it in. I've also never heard of it done before so I'd be diving in head first. I think it would be the most fun to do and rewarding once complete though.
A commodore engine sourced in the same way. It's bascially the same as the 3.8 buick v6 as far as I know. A fairly common conversion in our parts so plenty of tech info and even conversion kits commercially available. I would ultimately prefer to do something more original however.
Ford 5 litre V8 from a falcon which by using the 302 windsor block there is also a lot of tech info. Again not so original, but in terms of my goals meets them head on.
Finally, Nissan RB25DET. I think this would be fairly straight forward and a worthwhile conversion.
I've got cars which have 3 of these engines between them, So I'm even considering using one to donate a complete set up for my ute. Mainly the skyline I'm thinking. It's an R33 4 door which I am not too keen on anymore, but it has a great engine and drive-line. It's currently for sale with intention of funding the engine conversion for the ute. If it sells I'm going to look for a donor car, if it doesn't then it might just become the donor car. lol
Anyway so thats my story I guess. I look forward to hopefully posting my own build thread soon enough!
