I am new to everything Mazda. lol I just acquired a 91 Mazda. I was told it might need a new clutch as well as "rings". (white smoke issue) plz help if you can. Are these run away issues? Are they an easy fix? And possible ruff estimate of installation cost. Thank you very much.

Some info we need is what is the mileage on the truck.Next on the transmission is it slipping in one gear or all of them.Next while the truck is running and in neutral is there a lot of noise until the clutch pedal is depressed? It could be something as simple as replacing the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder. As for cost of a clutch you could spend 300.00 on a kit with everything and this price is just ball park for the general idea.Plus getting the flywheel machined if needed and or replaced adds cost.On the smoking these trucks are known to do this and a full rebuild will take care of that and I can't price that as there other's here who can give details, cost, time etc in that area.Welcome to the site and just give the details specific to your truck on how the items you have are occurring for a more accurate response to assist you.Hope this helps and I know I probably left something off or incorrect on something may other's fill in the gaps.

Sounds like yours is a candidate for the piston rings/cylinder head re-do, unfortunately common on these trucks as they age. I did mine Oct. 2011.

If you remove the engine to do this, then great time to re-do the clutch, including resurface of the flywheel.

But it's worth it, then yours will also be dependable. And fun.

Is the smoke all the time or just at start up after sitting and cooling off? That probably is just valve seals.
Do a compression check to get an idea of rings condition, not to say the oil rings are not gummed up in the groove and not wiping the walls down, but are the other ones still doing their job? Should have better than 130 p.s.i.g each cylinder.
The slip, is that in a lower gear? Does it just slip when you lean into it or when carrying weight in it? How much slack is in the linkage between the slave cylinder and the lever it pushes? If none, it may be too tight, hence release bearing is engaged some against the pressure plate? Otherwise, sounds like a bad disc and/or weak pressure plate. Maybe you can drive it lightly until you decide what direction you are going with it.
Think about if you plan on keeping it original, swapping engines, or what before you invest in something you are not married to?

Just thinking.......
