I just picked up a 1986 Mazda truck. It is a cab plus (or extended cab) whichever its called.....

I am just curious as to what it ACTUALLY is.... Its been basically stripped down to the shell (he was going to make it into a show truck and never got around to doing it).

It looks just like all the mazdas from 86-93.... On the title the model is listed as "820"????

So is this truck a 2000, 2200, etc.....?

I have the vin and everything if that would help....

Any insight you guys can give me would be appreciated......

on the drivers side of the block, there is an identifier in the casting. "FE" is a 2 liter, "F2" is a 2.2.
Also, the 2 liter was only available for two years, 86-87. The 2.2 was available from 86-93.
Additionally, the 2 liter upper timing cover is smooth with a bump at where the center of the cam gear would be, the 2.2 upper cover is ribbed vertically.

If you pull the valve cover, the rockers are manually adjusted on the 2.0, hydraulic ( and no adjusters) on the 2.2.

And one more, the lower timing covers are usually marked 2.0 or 2.2.

There are always exceptions, people change out parts all the time like cam covers and heads (they interchange between 2.0 and 2.2). For example, my engine has a ribbed upper timing cover and hydraulic rockers, but its a Japanese market 2.0.

DISCLAIMER.. This is a Russ-D orriginal.. i did not write this!

I really appreciate the info, but it will not help me on this particular question.

I should have mentioned.... When I said it has been stripped to a shell.... That means EVERYTHING.....

No engine, trans, or interior.....

Basically its a "roller"......

It has the body, front & rear suspension.....

Oh.... And there are no id tags under the hood to identify what engine it originally had...

Thanks for trying to help... I really do appreciate it..

OK!!!!!

Call me a idiot!!!!!!

I took my Snap-On MT2500 scanner and used it to decode the VIN......

It originally had a 2.0L engine... (8th character of the vin is the engine code)

So I would assume it would be a B2000...... Correct?

Sorry for being so stupid...... But when you work on vehicle for a living sometimes you forget the obvious stuff.......

DUH!!!!!

they didn't start putting the 2200 in the b-series until late 87, some 87 models have the 2000 motor, some have the 2200.

yea i was gone say all 86 models stock came with the 2.0 and most of the 87s came stock with the 2.0 but some did get the newer 2.2. but ether of those motors will fit in your truck no problem if you guy a complet motor and tranny you just need the mounts for which ever motor you use i think some guys even got some 2.0s for sell im gone have one soon as i get my butt out there and pull it.
