Saw a 70s style Mazda pick-up tonite with "Rotary" written on the tailgate.

Anyone have any info on this?

yeah,it's called a "REPU" or Rotary Engine Pick Up. I think they just had the 1.1L 12A rotary in them. Otherwise,I don't know much about them. Pretty rare though.

Only made them for a couple or three years.I had a 74,1.3 liter 13b rotary engine with a 4 speed. The 75s had the same engine with a 5speed.Only made short bed regular cabs.Hitachi 4 barrel carb with oil injectors as the 13b had no way to top end oil other than thru oil into the fuel.Trucks used about 1 qt of oil in 1000 miles, smoked on start up much as the 2200s do except for different reasons.Had sealing problems in the rotary comb.chamber that was later cured with a diff.kind of gasket.Poor mileage about 13-15 mpg was all u could expect.Ran like stink off poop and would pull a 240z thru all the gears.Suicide hood made it difficult to work on the front end.Battery was mounted in a tray in front of passenger side rear wheel-maintenance nightmare. No room for it under the hood.I stil have a repair manual for one if anyone is interested in the finer details.I wish I still had mine. In the 'peg... at the Norwood.

I've seen it a couple times before... but this time I made a point of stopping to have a good look.

I'll try to contact the owner and ask permission to take some pics for the site.

Cheers !!

wow,I thought for the age they would have had the 12A like the SA and FB RX7s. Definetly cool trucks. I've never seen one in person, only in pics.

haha man...that's crazy.

I never really recall my RX7 smoking...well...it smoked tires...and it could shoot flames. I have a video at night of it popping a couple flames out the exhaust. I'd upload it,but I'm on dialup.

The only reason they smoke upon start up is that there are bowls on all three sides of the rotors! And when you shut off the car there is an oil gallery that drips small amounts of oil into these bowls. So when you start it up there will be lubrication inside of the engine, therefore the smoke you see when starting it up would be the burning of excess oil in the engine!

Trust me! I have a T2 outside in the driveway and used to work as a tech for Atkins Rotary!

And I trust what crazymikey says as well, he knows his rotaries!
