As nice as the Contour is,just beware,if it is a V6,they are problem ridden and it'll spend more time being fixed than it will being driven. The 4 cyls are great. Same engine that is in the Focus. With the 5spd,they're super good on gas and just as quick as the V6,and WAY more reliable. I had two 4 cylinder Contours and they were both extremely reliable. One was an automatic and it was really bad on gas and ate front brakes like no tomorrow. The 4 cyl 5 spd was awesome. I also had a V6 with a 5 spd and that thing had something wrong with it every time I drove it.
Water pumps on the V6s are notorious for failing. Mine went on me. I thought it was a blown head gasket with the amount of coolant that had sprayed all over the engine bay. 3rd gear synchros wear out on the manuals too. I had to put a new tranny in mine. The V6s are really nice to drive, but the autos are pigs on gas too,and the sticks are alot more fuel efficient, getting marginally lower milage than a 4 cyl 5 spd.
Just beware, when either the 4 cyl or the V6 breaks, they are extremely difficult cars to work on under the hood.
Oh,if you're getting a 4 cyl,I have an MSD ignition coil for one,lol.
