I just checked mine and its only a 3 wire with it grounding through the motor. Just looking at the pic some more, do you have a + going to the battery?

I also noticed that they use a black wire for the battery positive so test that "ground" to see if its really a ground.

well shi*, lol its too dark now to do anything, by 3 wire you mean the 2 plugs and the stud? i will test that "ground" tomorrow after work, just wont drive it, i really appreciate you help sierra.

No problem, but now its bugging me as to whats going on. My alternator has 3 wires in total. One 8 ga power to the battery and one plug with 2 small 16ga wires. I can't find a wiring diagram on the web but I'll print one out tomorrow on mitchells.

i have one plug with 2 16ga wires and one plug with i think one 16ga wire, and the the black 8ga..... and the yellow/red i cant figure out. i appreciate it and will check back tomorrow

It looks like that black wire is the power to battery wire, and someone put a ring terminal on it too large to stay on the nut on the post.

The ground wire will be black with a yellow tracer stripe on it.

yeah, so this morning i tested that black wire with the large trerminal and yes it is my battery cable, so i started the truck and checked the voltage off the stud, and it reads 12v, so i turned off the truck put that cable back on the alternator and started the truck and guess what..? now my charging light is on lol, WTF does this mean i have a bad alternator? i think imma pull it out tonight and have it tested

BUMP... would rather not pull it out if i dont have too,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

could that extra plug go to an a.c. compressor or something else?
slammedyota91   +1y
no the compressor is on the other side of the truck i dont know but i cant figure it out, when i get back from reno this weekend ill put it out and have it tested, thanks everyone.

yellow wire with red stripe and white plug goes to the oil sending unit on the block right behind the alt and replace the missing nut on the bottom of the alt bracket
