friend of mine is trying to get me to go to the army with him.....

when you join any military service you go where they tell you and when they tell you, unless you ahve a specific duty contract outlining what you will be doing and where your tours of duty will be, they can do with you as they please, i think the army is a great career personally, you get free medical benefits, and they are very good, you get college payed for if you want, and you get to travel and see the country/world, my dad was in the army for 26 years and we live alot of cool places, alaska and hawaii were the best, if you are debating it i would say go for it, if you dont like it you can leave after 2 or 4 years,

I don't think it's possible to predict WHERE you're going to go in the american military. Or in Any military. You could stay on familiar ground, end up in another state or province dealing with disasters or you could even end up getting shot at in some foreign country you pretty much do what they say.

Coast Guard is the only service that dosen't leave the US.. but there are ice breakers in alaska and the great lakes.. something to consider.

Ya they will have him working on hummers in Iraq after an IED blows the front off.
Seriously though, like drpdmazda said you are going to go where ever the hell they tell you too. My mom is still active duty 23+ years and she goes where they need her. If your buddy is afraid of going into a war tell him to get an admin job. Yes, there are alot of benefits, free health care, free housing, GI bill, but keep in mind that those should be plusses to the reason you join. My dad was also a Marine and he said that all the guys that loved it joined because they wanted to serve ther country.

when you join the military you give up your civilian rights and you are now owned by the government.
you may be able to find a job working for the government working on machines or trucks, but are not actually in the military....

Umm.. I'm alittle confused by your statement. If you make an oath to defend your country or make sacrifices for freedom then you are in the military. It doesnt matter if your working on trucks, an accountant or shooting people on the front line. I have a ton of respect for the people that join.

o man! i have the highest respect for those serving our country. so many of those men and women dont even agree with a lot of what our government does, but they are still serving and keeping our country FREE!
i was just saying that once you join the military, you give up a lot of rights, and they can pretty much send you where they need you...
