automatic shifter question

i know this is going to sound dumb, but in this area, i am clueless. my friend has a new B&M megashifter for an automatic tranny that he had bought for his 89 mustang and had sold the car so he didnt need it anymore..... my question is, are shifters designed to be interchangable? i know they some are made for certain vehicles, but is this something that would just unbolt then bolt in the new one? someone help me out. thanks in advance.
