well when I was swaping the 15's for the 18's today I found out a few things that made a 30min job turn into a 2hr job.

first, the 18's had lock nuts on them. for which, i didn't have a key. thankfully, I had 'easy-outs' and got them off.

second, whoever put them on ended up crosstheading and obviously carried on with an impact gun on 3 of the studs on the left rear wheel. grunt.. snap! .. crap!! .. grunt .. snap!

how do i change those two snapped rear wheel studs??? .. and how hard is it?

thanks
rob
ps. i posted this here because there wasn't an applicable area in the 'tech' section

The studs have a square head bolt and are just driven up in the flange from the back side.Just drive them out and replace.I have not changed one in awhile and I seem to remember some clearance issues when removing the old studs so check on that first.May not be easy if they are rusted in.BJ

sounds too much like my luck as bj said, it will not be an easy fix, you'll have to pull the brake drum, and the clearance issue he spoke of will more that likely denote that you'll have to pull the axle shaft (argh!)

good luck!

hmm.. ok .. how does the axle shaft get pulled? being that the differential is a sealed unit... meaning with no cover...

you should have just enough clearance to knock them out without havin to pull anything but the drum

Yeah, I have done this on the truck. You do need to pull the drum and make sure to rotate the axel to a spot that clears the brake shoes. It shouldn't be too bad.

now I just need to make sure I find the correct studs, our supplier raybestos has two listed for the rear.

79-84 are shorter than 86-93. Thats why there is two listings. Spin the broken stud to the bottom and knock it out. It will clear and fall out. Then slip in the new one and install.(done this many times)
