just basically welding two pipes together, but you have to make sure they are plumb & all that,, especially when you are welding larger pipes together, they have to be dead nut.....most places make you take a welders test, to certify you on their particular site......., if you don't have any experience in it, you could probably start out as an apprentice, and be topped out in a couple years....the apprentices usually start out at a decent amount of pay......keep your record clean of any trouble, and you can get a job (although usually thru a union) @ some of the nuclear power plants, the scale for work there is much better.....over the next 10-20 years, there will be several newer plants built, and the existing ones are always upgrading to keep up with technology. even if you don't want to work as a rad worker, there is always work in petro and other industries, etc, etc....you get the idea.....but most places like that have tight security, thus the reason for keepin out of trouble.......bad wrap, no job, clean slate, mucho denero to be made!
