ok i have posted a thread on here was asking about my timing belt problems thanks to those who have replied, well later that day after i got the timing belt changing my water pump went out fixed it the same day. found out i have a head gasket blown. from start to finish my chilton book says 33 steps from start to finish. but doesnt give me a time on how long it will take. does anyone have a clue? and yeah i feel like a mazda 2.2lt expert after doing all this work on my truck lol.

My self I could have it done in a day with all the parts and tools and not running into any snags.

Replacing the head gasket shouldn't take more than 3-4 hours at the most. I spent most of the day yesterday doing a ring and bearing job on my 2200. And believe me, it was a pain in the neck as I left the engine in, and my truck is EXTREMELY static dropped... As far as the head gasket goes, I say 3-4 hours, as mine has a weber 32/36 and a header, not all the vacuum lines and factory exhaust junk.....My best advice is to get someone to help and remove the head, intake, and carb in one piece. One person can do it, but it's ALOT easier with another set of hands.

I didn't knowed you could try changing rings. With the engine still in,I completely did the opposite and started cleaning the frame and engine bay.

Yep, I did new NPR pistons and rings, new rod bearings, and had the head re-done last October, did all that with the engine still installed.

How long to just do a head gasket? For me - as I've only done it once - I think I could do in one day. It's easier with a Weber. So mark ALL the vacuum lines and wires, that's my hint.

You can unbolt the whole intake/carb and set it off to the side. I set a claw hammer upside down on the oil filter and rested the intake onto it. Easy

How's its running since you put the rings in?? This is my first engine build,I don't know what to expect since mines going be a daily driver

How's it runnin' ??? Pretty damn good. 7K on it since October, ran it 300 miles up and down the Interstate, Arizona heat, mountains just yesterday (broke another %%^#@#$^&**^$ Weber carb throttle return spring, 30 second fix on the exit ramp, I carry a spare). Broke the 190K barrier yesterday.

Like I said: I did new pistons/new rings (NPR), new connecting rod bearings (look at the shape of the crankshaft journals and bearings in the link below), and had the head redone (no cracks). I never had a head gasket leak, owned it for 18 years now, the engine just smoked before, and I felt super self-conscious driving this in the high-dollar area where I work, and I wanted to be environmental for my kids. Parts/machine shop costs were about $700.
