So last week I bought another b series. Its a 87 b2000 se5. Went to town into it already with a new weber, plugs, wires, new pan and valve cover gaskets, just a basic overhaul. The guy before me already did a new cap. But even before I did all that it was having this same problem...

When its cold it fires right up. I drive around for a bit and gets to opperating temp, I go into a store, come out 20min later while its still hot and it won't fire, just cranks over. I wait two hours, starts right up.... however... it'll compression start at any temp.

Anybody have this issue before or anyone know the cause??

Thanks

I say check all your grounds (at frame, and engine, especially) and your terminals at the battery and starter. I've seen heat do strange things to electrics.

Is there anything in the distributor that would prevent it from starting when its hot? Since it compression starts everytime can I rule out it being the coil and distributor? Or is there another component/factor in the ignition circuit I'm overlooking...

Do a double check on the timing.. sometimes when the timing belt is done or the distributor is fooled with the timing can end up 180 degrees off and the truck will still run well but once it warms up starting it can be a pain.. also pull the upper timing cover and inspect the upper cog, there is three cam pin holes and sometimes the cam bolt will losen and warp the alignment pin hole... hope it helps
