how hard would it be?..i guess that depends on what you consider to be hard. I put my SBC in mine, made all my mounts, tranny crossmember and did my wiring on my own. But i do have a good understanding of how everything needs to go together and what will work and what wont. It took some time, but it all works properly. So how hard is all about who is doing in and what you wanna put up with. Lets put it this way, your not gonna be able to bolt anything right in and have it done in a day or even two. As far as how much? Gonna depend on were you go to get your stuff and what you are willing to pay i guess. Could probally get a motor and tranny from just about anything and put in it. Personally id stay with the gm setup. Parts seem to be more available and i personally think that they are easier to work on. But its all up to you.

I would go with a Ford 351w. More hp potential, plenty of parts out there, same effort as it would take to do a 302/5.0, plus the distributor is on the front of these engines.

Also, both engines take the same transmission, so find an old AOD and plug it in.

It would be good to go ahead and get an 8.8 rear end out of a Fox Mustang {87-93} as well as the driveshaft and be done.

I had to shorten an old Ford driveshaft that I had laying around, but it only cost $40 so not too bad. Also, I have a Fox Mustang driveshaft and I mated up the rear to the Mazda rear and the bolt pattern was the same so if you don't have the funds for another rear end then that might help.

you said it starts and idles, but dies when you give it gas...? have you cleaned the mass airflow sensor..? im guessing you have a 2.6 fi by your screen name... same engine i have... since it runs i doubt its the computer... could just be a bad or dirty maf sensor, or maybe something else just as simple...
