From 1500 rpm- 2500 rpm's I am getting what sounds like a owl or dove..,, sound from behind the dash??? You know right near the gauges area. It almost sounds like a vacuum leak, because it is more noticeable when I am in gear, and under a load. I was thinking maybe vacuum booster is leaking, but I have a firm brake pedal. So maybe it could be the tachometer, but there is no cable driving it so it must be an electronic tach.
Anyone ??? Does anyone else hear this in their :"B"Or is that the owl or dove that is pumping out the whopping 85 horsepower??
Also, please help with how to post pics? I can't even post an avatar, because it is supposed to be less than 11 pixels?? really?? I can't find that anywhere. HELP!!

Okay, I could swear that I had tightened down the carburetor real good after the clean and rebuild, but that seems to be where the noise was coming from. I checked the carburetor mount bolts once more, and they were just snugged, and not good and tight. I don't know, maybe the gaskets compressed some, and had to be re-torqued, kinda like a head gasket situation.
I haven't really heard the noise again after I re-tightened those mount bolts, but I got a lot of other personal/Health drama to worry about right now. So If you think you hear a bird under your hood sometimes, that is what to look for, a Vacuum leak...., OK!

Thanks for all of the technical help out there!!!! Hello???

Hey man.. we're here for ya! Just sometimes either we aren't on a lot or if we don't have an answer we try not to confuse you by putting up responses that won't help... at first post I was gonna say it sounded like a bad speedo cable... ran into this a few times.. there are a few things underhood that could make that sound so good to see you found it quickly.. and.. as far as adding pics and an avatar.. there are good.websites that offer avatar building from your pics or they have some cool ones you can use.. its a Google and look procedure.. as far as regular pics..you can load them in a hosting site like Photobucket.com which will convert them to html so you can load them on the site easy... hope this helps a bit.. we are here for ya.. just gotta be patient..

Well Thanks, Dawg!!

I was feeling kinda left out.., ya know!! I did lube the speedo cable too, as I thought that was it, but I guess I was preemie in thinking that I got rid of the noise completely, because it is still there but very faint. Maybe it is a vacuum advance issue.
I sucked on the diaphragm hose, and it holds vacuum ok, so I will just drive it like that, cause, for the life of me, I can't completely get rid of the lifter tick either. Even after the engine shop boiled everything (including the valve train parts), I also cleaned and soaked everything and used a small wire to ensure that all passages were cleared. I even went and drilled/enlarged the restricter that is inserted into the oil galley/port in the top of the block where it mates the gasket and head, to allow a little more oil feed to the valve train. I just enlarged it a little, cause it has to have back pressure there to get a lot of oil to the main bearings, I am guessing.
It is important to, when re-assembling the valve train rockers and shafts, that everything has the proper orientation..,, i.e all oil passages are lined up to allow continuous oil flow. So even after I put a new camshaft ,new lifters, after bleeding them by moving the little ball bearing away and pumping them up while immersed in oil, I still have that damn tick!! It starts up very quiet, but as soon as it warms up it starts in with the noises.
I guess you can say that I am OCD, but If I am going to put all of this time and effort into a rebuild, then da88it,I want it to sound like a new engine!!! I think I will run straight 40 vis. as this is Central Texas, and it never gets below 25 degrees here anyway!! So sorry for the long winded message, but it is good that this forum is here, cuz MT is gone, and I just gotta get this off my chest!!
Thanks for listening!!!and If you can help me with some repair info.., then holla back!!

I rebuilt my B2200 engine back in October, but I didn't install new lifters. I still have the ticking at times. But it's ticked since I bought it in 1994 at 50K miles.

I just don't give it a second thought.

Lol. Mazda tick should just be a soundtrack for Bscene..they all tick in some form or another.. with a rebuild you gotta give it some time.. the lifters are super tempermental.. every time I send a head out I pull the rocker assemblys, seems that hot tanking them no matter what makes them tick... if you really want it gone than you could do a B2200/B2000 hybrid engine.. 2.2 lower end with a 2.0 head .. the 2.0 head has mechanical rockers so once you adj them they stay pretty good and quiet.. . plus if you machine the head down and port and polish it while you're at it .. makes a good amount of more oomph.. also..with your noise issue.. check the diagram flap for the heat riser in the intake portion of the air cleaner assm.. had a couple go bad.. makes a cool weird sound almost like what you describe

I tried the mechanical rockers., and it sure is quieter, but I just didn't have that smooth, power curve/ horsepower as what I now have with the hydraulic set-up. I think it is because I was using the mechanical valve train, with the hydraulic camshaft. Something about lift and duration differences..., or the lobe not being rounded enough, causing too much drag/friction. I like the horsepower/performance gain, that I am now getting by going with the new "Rock Auto" camshaft and hydraulic set-up.

I got a real good deal from "Rock Auto"....,, $50.00 bucks for a close-out cam!!! I can get it up to 100mph with plenty of pedal left!! Even with all new/factory M.I.China suspension..,( I paid about $150 for all new front suspension) It is TIGHT!!!, but I feel almost like I am going to get airborne.,, so I shut-her down!!!

About the heat riser??? I don't have that diaphragm on the '93 B2200, I don't think?? I do see one on the B2000, but the B2200 just has an always operational heat riser set-up. Anyway, My truck may look like a ..,, "Ghetto ,Hoop "T"" but she runs like a Dream!! (I still need to try to post pics. I will try on my "T-mobile phone,as I have Ubuntu operating system on my laptop...,, maybe it is not compatible.

Rock ON!!!! Mazda TRUCKERS..,,,, RULE!!!!!

Cool cool..there is always some positives and negatives to the dawgs.. key is finding the quirks you don't mind dealing with.. doesn't matter what it looks like ..if its a Mazda it belongs here hell.. I've got over 12 trucks in my possession and have restored and sold over 20 of them.. they almost always start as someone else's hoop-t.. lol

Okay, I think I found it, because the brake booster vacuum hose looked like it had very small spidery cracks in it. I bought some power steering hose and used that, and the noise is no longer there anymore. Well I threw the old hose away, and I found out that there is a one way valve mechanism in there. I am going to have to drive it like this for now, but I was able to order one , but it is like $22.00 including S/H.

SO if you hear an OWL under your hood, or behind your dashboard..,, check all your hoses!! I replaced all carburetor and intake vacuum hoses, and it was like 60 feet of hose I think. at .99 cents a foot..,, well you know..,, it sure adds up. You will be better off ordering a spool of it, online.

Arrrghhh!!!! But I sure love my Beeee!!!!
