Yep, I was busy today. I came across some nice 14" chrome wheels (the kind that I think came on SE-5 Extended Cab B's). I figured my red regular cab B2200 would look good with them. It came with brand new 205/75R14 cheapo passenger car tires with whitewalls. My current rims are 14" steel that look like they were spray painted with Tremclad black a long time ago. They don't look that nice. I figured until I decide what I'm going to do, and make the truck look better, I'll put the cheapo passenger car tires (with whitewalls hidden by turing them to the inside) and mounted on my new 14" chrome wheels.
But eventually I want to go with the Prerunner look (a lifted 2wd truck that looks like a 4x4 and has some 4x4 suspension components). To pull off that look, I figured I will need 15" wheels with at least 215/75R15 (maybe 225 or 235/75R15). What I really wanted was a set of chrome or aluminum 15" aftermarket or OEM wheels (of any manufacturer as long as they are 6 bolt).
I got a good deal on some 15" Nissan chrome wheels - but the previous owner used that "black chrome" paint. He actually did a pretty good job, but given the choice I would have preferred regular chrome. But, the black chrome is growing on me. Looks kind of bad ass. Looks like I can use the stock chrome Mazda center cap for a bit of contrast. Might use these for winter tires, if I decide to rustproof the truck and drive it in the winter. To me, ANY black wheels look like spare tire wheels or black steelies for winter tires. Even if they're chrome or aluminum. But, these are more like light charcoal, and looks ligher or darker depending on the light. Not quite as dark as pure black paint, so maybe I can live with it. Not sure how much trouble it would be to remove the black chrome paint to expose the regular chrome. Might not be worth it.
After a couple of days, someone I emailed on Craigslist finally got back to me about a set of nice 15" 6 spoke aluminum wheels. I'm wondering if I should get them and sell the black chrome wheels. Had I known those were still available, I might not have bought the black chrome wheels. But, I might consider keeping two sets of wheels and tires. The black chrome for winter tires and the aluminum ones for all terrain tires.
I know I could go with bigger wheels, but I want to put some meaty tires on the rims. 14" seems too small and there's practically no tires in the size I would need. 15" tires seem to be plentiful and cheap to buy. 16" and bigger are more popular and thus, expensive. And the bigger I go with rim size, the lower profile tire I will need, which is not the way I want to go with this.
