Greetings,
I just dropped my short block off at the machinist to clean it up, bore/hone, and deck my block. I'm now looking at re-build kits online, and I'm putting out a request for people who have actually bought, installed and run a re-build kit from the net, or done their own bottom end. Let me know how it's holding up, and/or what combination of parts they used. Just to keep it clean, I would prefer people who have actually bought, installed, and run the parts they are talking about, not just general opinions of general companies their buddy's brothers friends dad told them were good. We all know that will go on forever, and go nowhere

For general info, this will be pretty much a stock build, with .020 over pistons, slightly over con rods and mains. I'll balance the pistons and rods while they are out (why not?). The future will include a search for factory fuel injection to replace this ridiculous carb. I still have to pass emissions for a few years, so no header yet.

Thank you for your time, experience, and info! I'll post my re-build, and update on my results. I've never actually started a thread to post, but seems like a good time to figure that out. _cheers!

I got my rebuild stuff from rockauto.com . Good prices and quick shipping. I got .020 over pistons, rings, rod and main bearings, oil pump, water pump, and a gasket set. Everything went together perfectly. I did however have a knock after the rebuild. I believe it to be the crank (which I kept) so its my fault. I also have a small oil leak by the front somewhere. Either oil pump gasket or front main seal. Again, prob my mistake. I went with a 32/36 weber on mine as I don't have to have emissions. I do however still have the factory carb and a rebuild kit for it if you need one.

I rebuilt myne last year, with a couple leaks(as the guy above said, it was my fault) i know how to fix them, just havent done it yet. I bought myne on eBay, was shipped next day i was impressed(but he is in Los Angeles and im about an hour away). was under 100$ i did a search on ebay and here is the link to the list i got. guess you can change it for your truck information, but i was very pleased with it. The seller i bought it from was "performancepart"

I got NPR pistons/NPR rings, and connecting rod bearings from an Ebay retailer. I got a FelPro head gasket kit from RockAuto. I got a CarQuest water pump and a Gates timing belt, plus Gates heater hoses. i got Mazda coolant bypass hoses.

You guys rock! Thanks for the help. I guess i was mostly worried about head gasket issues, and piston/ring quality. The guy at the machine shop told me to be careful about the "all in one" kits. Mostly because when things go wrong, people come back and blame him for it even though they took a risk on the cheap stuff. I totally understand that. There are quite a few things that can be done wrong when re-assembling the engine, and if you aren't paying attention to fitment can bite you in the ass later. Being that I am ultimately pretty lazy, I want it to be right the first time. I hate pulling things back apart. Waahh, learning takes effort. Haha!

By the way, OneLowMazda, How much would you want for the re-build kit?
