Like several who post asking for starting help, I can't figure out what you mean. Does the starter spin the engine at the proper speed, and the engine just doesn't start?

If not, how do you determine that you've "got fire", does that mean you checked for spark? Sometimes using generally-accepted technical terms helps us to understand, as we're not standing there with you. Example: last week my mom called and said her thingy was broken; pretty descriptive, huh ?

And did you do the timing belt correctly when you repalced the head gasket?

Provided the engine turns when you crank the engine and as Cusser mentioned more details would help...

If you worked on the timing belt or did a head job, I suggest you check and set the following:

The cam gear marked #1 is lined up with the 12 o'clock position mark.

The crank shaft pulley mark is at TDC and at the 12 o'clock position.

The #1 piston is flush with the top of the engine block.

The rotor under the distributor cap is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire which is at the 9 o'clock position.

If not matching up you'll need to do a timing belt install procedure...

These need to be set as described to set the timing mark using a timing light.
