I did the head gasket on my truck now ready to put the head back on. The new head bolts I bought did not come with washers. I'm not going to use the washers from the previous head gaskets cause they're in pretty bad shape. They look like they were lock washers as they dont connect all the way around, but i'm not too sure. Should i be using a lock washer with the new head bolts or just a regular washer. I got grade 8 washers and lock washer already im just unsure what to use....any thoughts or advice? Truck is a 87 b2600 if that helps

It is possible someone did the head before and didn't want to go back in after the 50 mile break in to retorque I would use the reg washers then after the first 50 miles go back in and retorque

I have removed the heads off two different engines for my truck. No lock washers. Just regular washers. They look like grade 8

Okay so turns out im just a dumbass and a few of the washers had broke when I was removing the head....all the other washers were regular. I tried to reuse the ones that were still good they started breaking at 50ftlbs, so i ended up replacing all the washers with regular ones and got them torqued to 70ftlbs. I'll take your advice richard93 and ill go back in after about 80km of driving or so and retourque. No idea what grade the washers were i put on, but my buddy is a heavy duty mechanic and he got me the washers cause no automotive shops around town had anything said they could prbly hold couple hundred ftlbs so i should be good to go. Thanks for the help.

No problem glad I could help just be real careful when u go back in to retorque these heads are supposed to be torqued to 64 ftlbs so you are over torqued now def don't let it get no more than 70 ftlbs

Okay thanks. The repair manual I had said 67-72 than after warmup I think it was 72-85...this is my first mechanical endeavour so I was going to go by the book, but 64 would make more sense cause even 70ftlbs seemed a bit overkill
