i just installed a power steering system on my 1988 b2200
the truck originally came with manual steering and it was just to hard for daily driving purposes, so i converted it to a power steering system. but i can fine out what type of fluid to use for the power steering system?
i went today (1/11/15)to a O'rilley auto parts and i asked the cashier what kind of power steering should i use and he told me "i think that truck uses transmission fluid" so that kinda confused me but ive heard of people using transmission fluid instead of power steering fluid because its thicker and ive read that the transmission fluid has a higher tolerance to heat.

so what do you guys think i should use or what do you guys use for your system ??

and also should i use a power steering cooler with my power steering system or should i just leave it simple with no cooler ??

or should i connect the low pressure hose to the transmission cooler on the radiator ? or is the pressure on the low pressure hose to high for the transmission cooler ???

any help would be highly appreciated

I've always used traditional power steering fluid in mine. The cashier at O'Reilly is not a mechanic (at which he could make 3X the $$$).

No additional cooler, you should have a little piece of U-shaped tube that functions as a PS fluid cooler.

You're overthinking this.

The choice is yours...

Aside from red dye, there is little difference between transmission fluid and power steering fluid.
I have used ATF in all my power steering units. It's a lot cheaper than PS fluid, and you get more.

DO NOT USE TYPE "F" IN YOUR PS SYSTEM! It has friction material in it. Good for a slipping transmission, not so much for PS system.

Yes cusser Im way over thinking this, this is my first truck and I plan to use it as a work truck and not a show truck or low rider so the power steering system is going to be a crucial component for daily driving,

Sincitylocal what was the longest time period you'ved used transmission fluid in your power steering system ?? And do you use a power steering cooler ??

In 1995 I changed the fluid in my 1975 mercury comet. My little brother is still driving that car today. I used to work on big trucks. All we used for the PS was ATF. It's common practice, and there's nothing to worry about.
If you just want to be cautious, use PS fluid.

I've never added a cooler, but I've never removed the factory cooler from any PS system either.

Like cusser said, take a two-foot(or longer)piece of tubing, loop it back on itself, and connect it somewhere in the return line, where it will have a little airflow running across it. That's how Mazda did it on the B-series trucks.

Sincitylocal I will try the ATF for a week or two and see how that works out then ill try the regular power steering fluid for awhile and compare the differences
